ECS in the Community Visit to the Old Folk's Home AWWA
A surprise for us was the unexpected appearance of many ECS staff members who did not put up their names on the notice board as requested. It was indeed a pleasant surprise. Most ECS staff members assisted the residents to ferry them from their block 123 to the lunch area. Many residents needed assistance and thus the opportunity for rapport between ECS and the residents. This broke the ice for the rest of the afternoon. Special mention must be given to the organizing committee members as well as Zhang Wei Li of CDP Division and Christopher Irudayasamy of Technical Support Division for meeting up at 8.30 am to do the arrangements of tables and chairs together with a gift on each chair for the residents. We started the mid-morning with a welcome speech by Mr. Tan Loon Tong who spoke in Mandarin and English. This was followed by the ice-breaker Tombola game. Tay Leng Jee of Logistics Division was master of ceremony and did a fabulous job of calling out the numbers in Malay, Hokkien, Cantonese, English and even Tamil. We are indeed fortunate to have the services of such a multi-lingual personnel. The residents and most of all ECS staff members were having a ball of a time with the Tombola sessions thanks to Leng Jee's wise cracks so much so we started the buffet lunch well past the designated lunch hour. No one was complaining as they were too busy enjoying themselves. ECS staff members were very exemplary during the lunch session helping out with dishing the food and drinks and even to the extent of feeding some of the residents. The residents were so touched by their gesture. This indeed is a feather in our cap to having such caring colleagues. After lunch, the residents requested for another session of Tombola followed by musical chairs which had us in stitches, watching "oldies but goldies" having a go at each other to notch the three prizes on offer. They were just like kids and not that we mind it either. What the heck...whether they behaved like kids or not....they were having the time of their lives...with us. Following the games, the residents retired to their abode for their afternoon nap and many ECS staff accompanied them to their respective rooms. Some stayed back to clear the area of the chairs and tables and debris. Mr. L T Tan gave a thank you speech and Krishnan reciprocated on behalf of ECS. All in all it was a memorable outing in which everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves be you an ECS staff member or a AWWA staff or resident. Their parting words. "When are you guys coming again"....? Trip to the Zoo This year's welfare event was hosted by Operations, ESG Services (Tech II) and CCD II. On Saturday 24 April, ECS staff brought 20 underprivileged children from Beyond Social Services to the Singapore Zoological Gardens. The group started off from the treetops trail and headed towards to the Children's World Playland. The walk brought them past the various exhibits which included the orang utans, polar bears, crocodiles and small mammals. The children were one boisterous bunch bursting with curiosity who were asking questions endlessly. Who could forget Dian, that 6 year old chatterbox with her constant yearnings to see the zebras. She was quite a handful. Also Vinod and Anand who certainly kept Swee Aun and Krishnan busy. Special mention should go to Kwang Ying (Operations) who guided us around the zoo like a "real pro" and Andrew (ESG Services, Tech II) who juggled between roles of the Medic and the Photographer. We were served KFC for lunch at a cozy pavilion. Courtesy of KFC, the children were handed out balloons. ECS had also prepared goodie bags and drinks for the children. After lunch, we visited the cat country and the African theme feature of Baboons and thereafter the group made their way towards the exit. At 3pm, it was finally time for us to say goodbye. Despite the aching feet and exhaustion, it was truly an event to remember. A week prior to the excursion, ECS staff had helped set up a Library Corner for the children at Beyond Social Services premises. A total of 150 books were collected. |
